"I used to press my face to the window of the little trinket shop on our corner, crowded shelves of candles and someone else's treasures, and picture something else entirely: the smell of espresso, a room full of people instead of things. I told myself it was for the neighborhood. Really, it was mostly for me. I'd trained at the International Culinary Institute, baked since I was old enough to reach a counter, and in 2015, when that window finally emptied out, I didn't think, I just opened the door. Now it's the room I imagined all along, just filled with people I didn't know I was dreaming up too."
